Run to help ensure no child goes hungry
Each and every day upwards of 400 students across 32 schools in Red Deer are provided lunches through The Mustard Seed. That number is staggering and the need is great.
An annual fun run sponsored by the Red Deer Primary Care Network for women of all ages will take place next month with funds raised going towards the program.
The PCN’s Women’s Fun Run will take place May 11th at the track at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and McKenzie Trails.
Funds raised will be directed to The Mustard Seed’s Lunch Program where more than 56,000 lunches are made for Red Deer students every year. Volunteers at The Mustard Seed make each lunch fresh daily. The lunches are nutritious and include a whole wheat sandwich, a serving of fruits and vegetables and a snack like a cookie, granola bar or muffin.
“We strive to create equity in our schools by reducing barriers for students. The Mustard Seed Lunch Program allows us to achieve that,” said Stu Henry, Superintendent of Schools.
Bev Manning, Chair of the Red Deer Public School Board added, “We recognize that the need is great. It’s tough to learn when all you can think about is food. We are very grateful to The Mustard Seed and its program in our community to help ensure no child goes hungry.”
Meanwhile, since beginning in 2012, more than 7,000 participants have crossed the finish line at the Women’s Fun Run. More than $85,000 has been raised for local charities with more than $35,000 alone going to The Mustard Seed last year to support the lunch program.
This year’s event features a 1 km, 3 km, 5 km and 10 km course which participants can run or walk. There will be races for the little ladies as well as the new Move Your Mood 3Km Family event. Time for the fellas to lace up!!
Family-friendly activities will also be on site with $10,000 in prizes to giveaway, including a potted plant for each finisher, t-shirts, swag bags and more. There will also be 60+ vendors on site, and lots to see and learn regarding health and wellness and great gift shopping just in time for Mother’s Day
