School Closures - COVID-19

The Government of Alberta at 4:30 P.M. on March 15 announced that students will not be attending school for an indefinite period of time. This change takes place immediately recognizing the priority to protect the health of students and staff. This measure is seen as an important means to contain and minimize the risk of transmission of COVID-19. It also recognizes that decisions to close schools rests with the Chief Medical of Officer of Health and Alberta Education.

In making the announcement, the Premier, Minister of Education and Chief Medical Officer of Health provided few details. These will be clarified in the hours and days ahead. What we do know is this:

  • Effective Monday, March 16, students will not be attending schools until further notice
  • The Minister did indicate that students will receive final marks this year and will continue to progress to the next grade level, including graduation
  • Staff will continue to be working in schools to provide and support continuity of learning for students
  • Provincial Achievement Tests have been cancelled for this year, while Diploma Examinations will continue.

As you can imagine, this is a dynamic and rapidly changing situation. We will share more details when they become available. Staff will be reporting to work on Monday morning where they will meet and start working on continuity of learning.

IMPORTANT: We ask that you give schools a few days to work on these important arrangements. As soon as plans and details are available, we will share information with families.

I am confident that our staff will do their very best in these difficult and challenging times to support continuity of learning and the needs of students. Together, we will do our best to continue the learning journey for our students.

Please stay tuned for more information as it becomes available, we will do our best to keep you updated on these new developments.

Sincerely,

Stu Henry
Superintendent of Schools
