Choir Kids takes place April 14 and May 5

Choir Kids take the stage with the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra

Elementary school choirs from Red Deer Public Schools and across Central Alberta are preparing for a special musical experience - Choir Kids!

This unique event, where students perform alongside the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, takes place April 14 and May 5 at Gaetz United Church.

“There’s nothing quite like this,” said Kati Ramsden, Vice Principal of Mattie McCullough Elementary. “For our students, it’s an incredible opportunity to have a professional orchestra bring their music to life. They are beyond excited.”

The collaboration starts months in advance. Ramsden sends her choir’s music to Maestro Claude Lepalme, Music Director of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and the event’s founder, who arranges the pieces for the symphony. From there, students rehearse, culminating in an unforgettable live performance with professional musicians.

Preparations begin right after Christmas, with schools from multiple divisions joining in. For many students and families, this is their first exposure to orchestral music.

“It’s been an amazing partnership - not only for the students, but also for music teachers across the region,” said Kati. “Getting to connect, collaborate and bring this experience to life has been really special.”

For students, this experience goes beyond singing - it builds confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation for orchestral music. Performing with a live symphony allows them to develop discipline, stage presence, and musicality in a way that few young singers get to experience. It’s an enriching opportunity that can inspire a lifelong love of music.

The event is also a true win-win for the community.

“We are fortunate to have a symphony orchestra in a city our size,” said Kati. “This is a fantastic outreach event, bringing orchestral music to families who might not otherwise attend a concert. It’s a wonderful way to connect and celebrate the arts together.”
