Students get hands on learning via dual-credit partnership with Olds College
Posted onThirteen Grade 11 and 12 students from Red Deer Public Schools are gaining real-world experience in veterinary sciences through a dual-credit program in partnership with Olds College. The Veterinary Technician Assistant Certificate program allows students to complete college-level courses and earn high school credits simultaneously, giving them a head start in their careers while still in high school.
“The students who are in the program will be fully certified when they are done,” said Renee Rudolph, CAREER Engagement Coordinator with Red Deer Public Schools. “Students take two courses each semester, all of which are delivered online, and participate in four to five lab sessions at Olds College per term. These labs give them invaluable hands-on experience that they can apply directly in the workforce.”
For example, during a recent lab at Olds College, students learned essential skills for preparing for surgery, including proper hand washing and sanitizing techniques, as well as assembling surgical tool kits.
“The labs are engaging and practical, giving students the opportunity to practice what they would do on the job,” said Rudolph. “This dual-credit program truly enhances their learning, and provides a taste of what to expect in their future careers.”
Reflecting on the atmosphere at Olds College, Rudolph said students were extremely engaged in their learning.
“It was a positive, collaborative environment where everyone was learning together,” she said. “Students had the chance to experience the Olds College campus, which added to the excitement.”
Rudolph also highlighted the importance of accountability in the program. “Students cannot miss a lab. Each lab is critical, teaching them responsibility and giving them a clear view of college expectations.”
In addition to preparing students for the workforce, the dual-credit program helps students build valuable college experience, putting them on a fast track towards their careers. “This program is perfect for those who are keen and know what they want to do,” she said. “It allows students to explore a real-world career, while still in high school, bridging the gap between high school and post-secondary learning.”
Red Deer Public is proud to offer students programs that prepare them for future success, and the Veterinary Technician Assistant Certificate program with Olds College is a testament to that commitment.
