English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL is a (5 credit) course designed to give opportunities to learn, practice and refine skills required for success in courses taken outside of ESL in mainstream high school curriculum courses. Each student is expected to make progress and advance all language arts skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing. In addition, students will be given many opportunities to participate in Canadian cultural activities.

- ESL Level 3 (5 credits)
- ESL Level 4 (5 credits)
- ESL Level 5 (no credits)
Prior to registration at LTCHS, students will complete an English language proficiency test. Scores from that test will determine the level of ESL in which a student will be registered.
ESL Introduction to Canadian Studies 15/25(5 credits). This course is designed to assist students new to Canada build knowledge about Canada and develop language skills needed for success in future Social Studies courses.
Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) – The staff at LTCHS work together with Settlement Support in Schools workers employed by C.A.R.E to assist immigrant and refugee students with their transition to school at Thurber and life in Red Deer.
