The Optimist Club of Red Deer donated 67 bikes to students at Fairview Elementary School

Optimist Club donates refurbished bikes to elementary students

Fairview Elementary students will be riding into spring with big smiles and new wheels, thanks to the generosity of the Optimist Club Red Deer. The Club donated 67 refurbished bikes to students and families in need.

Fairview Elementary is a designated Red Deer Public’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) school, serving a diverse and vibrant community of newcomers to Canada. For many of these students, receiving a bike opens up more than just recreation, it means greater independence, physical activity, and a sense of belonging in their new community. Students who were interested in receiving a bike told school administrators why they wanted one before being selected.

“This generous donation from the Optimist Club truly means the world to our students and their families,” said Vice Principal Greg Joslin. “Many of our families are new to the country, and still getting settled. A bike is something that brings joy, independence and connection with others. We are incredibly grateful for this ongoing partnership. It’s a wonderful example of community in action.”

Members of the Optimist Club collect, repair and refurbish bikes year-round. For the donation to Fairview Elementary, members spent the entire winter refurbishing the bikes. It’s a project driven by a commitment to youth and optimism for the future.

“When we see kids light up as they pick out a bike of their own, it’s a reminder of why we do this,” said Les Trevor, President of the Optimist Club of Red Deer. “It’s not just about bikes, it’s about building connections and showing families that they are supported here.”

Ken Williamson, an Optimist Club of Red Deer member, said being part of the Red Deer community means supporting one another.

“We see this bike program as a way to welcome families and support children, and show that they are valued members of a community that cares,” he said.

“We believe every child should have the chance to feel like they belong. A bike can be a small step in helping a child feel more confident, more connected, and more at home in their community.”

The partnership between Fairview Elementary and the Optimist Club is one that continues to grow stronger each year. Together, they are helping ensure that every child has the chance to experience the joy of riding a bike and the sense of independence that comes with it.
