While other students dive into the magic of stories, other children start to lose interest and feel like giving up because reading doesn’t come as easy. While all children learn at their own pace, statistics show that those who are not reading at grade level by the end of Grade 3 are at significant risk of not completing high school.

Reading is the foundation for all learning. If your child struggles with reading, chances are they are going to have a difficult time understanding a math problem, comprehending a social project or grasping the wonders of science.

While the resources schools put into reading supports and interventions in the early grades are significant, some students just need more.

This is where Reading College comes in. Every year the Reading College program helps over 60 students who at the end of Grade 2 are struggling with reading. During the month of July, these children have an amazing experience that will not only develop their reading skills, but more importantly, increase their interest and motivation to read and write.

Thanks to the unwavering support of our community, Reading College becomes a reality. Partnering with Red Deer Polytechnic, we offer these children an immersive experience, where science labs, arts, trades, and technology come alive. Imagine the wonder in their eyes as they explore these avenues of learning, paving the way for a brighter future.

Daily, students are provided transportation and nutritious meals. The program is led by three Master Teachers along with five recent graduates from the education program at Red Deer Polytechnic, so each child receives direct support. The days are enriched with different activities that bring reading and writing alive.
