Red Deer Public donates $40,000 to School Lunch Program

Mustard Seed donation

Imagine coming to school every day without food because there isn't enough food at home. Children should never have to worry about where their next meal will come from. Thanks to the dedication and efforts of The Mustard Seed, hundreds of students in Red Deer and surrounding communities are provided with nutritious lunches every day, ensuring they have an opportunity to focus on learning.

The impact of the Mustard Seed's School Lunch Program is immeasurable. They serve 267 healthy lunches each and every day to 17 schools within Red Deer Public, extending their support to neighbouring divisions as well. In the 2022/2023 school year, their unwavering dedication led to the delivery of an astounding 94,744 lunches to students – an increase of more than 16,000 from the previous year. This work is nothing short of remarkable, and it is deeply cherished by our community.

The $40,000 donation was made at Aspen Heights Elementary School during an assembly on Oct. 17. This contribution is made possible after our Division received $250,000 in Nutrition Funding from Alberta Education, earmarked for breakfast and lunch programs. With the needs of each school within our Division met, we believe that supporting the Mustard Seed's School Lunch Program is a fitting way to utilize the remaining funds.

The donation will allow the Mustard Seed to make an additional 10,000 lunches for students in need.
