Oriole Park Elementary opens Outdoor Learning and Indigenous Gardens
With a focus on First Nations, Métis and Inuit teachings, École Oriole Park School has opened a new beautiful garden space for students. With a Medicine Wheel focal point to assist with the school’s First Nations teachings, the garden will align with curricular outcomes in almost all subject areas including math, science, social studies, health and wellness, and certainly with teachings in Indigenous education.
The grand opening included local Elder John Sinclair, did a smudge and song, presentations from the school and community partners. The first plantings also took place to officially start the garden growing, with a focus on plants that will help feed students in the school’s nutrition program.
“Our new garden space would not be possible without our great community partners, and we look forward to continuing to welcome them back to the garden throughout the season,” said Lori Irvine, Principal at École Oriole Park School. “We can’t wait to get our students excited about gardening, and spend time in this beautiful space while honouring the Indigenous community.”
